"Siberian Odyssey by Ann Levy is a wonderful book about the author's ancestors; I simply could not put this book down! This riveting saga starts in Russia and takes the reader to Siberia, from the salt mines to the pioneer towns and countryside. It is a story of one courageous man and his family through a turbulent era. I highly recommend this rich and wonderful book." - Janice Guyette
"Siberian Odyssey by Laura Chamberlin Levy is an exciting and interesting journey through troubled times. We of this generation have no knowledge of the strength needed to survive in 1800's Siberia. Book Summary
Laura Chamberlin Levy’s great-great grandfather was exiled to Siberia in 1833. She has written a unique story based on this fact and the true stories her mother told her about her other maternal ancestors who lived in Siberia in the 19th century. Mesmerized, Laura interviewed her mother in depth and then began the reading and intense research required to bring this remarkable family odyssey to life.
That research provided the basis for this wide-ranging novel. From unjustly exiled Russian Jews to Polish immigrants, the “cavalcade of characters” come together in far eastern Siberia. Each person’s unique experience and personality illuminates the travels and meetings that produced the author’s maternal family line. They were all part of the diverse group of people who settled there before 1885, known as Old Settlers or Siberiaks. The book provides a fascinating insight into those times, as well as depicting the hardships that were part of being Jewish in 19th century Russia.
Relying on additional information gathered by her father in the 1920s and genealogical
records assembled by her brother, she was able to piece together an intimate picture of the
struggles, tragedies and triumphs of people and times long gone.
